Keep you teeth insured!
An insurance cover for you teeth? Now who would have thought that was necessary? Actually, it is quite necessary! Rising dental care prices makes dental insurance a blessing.
While looking for dental insurance plans, you need to narrow down to one that covers costs ranging from your checkups to cleaning and x-rays. In short, any procedure that you would require to help you maintaining proper oral care should be covered by your plan. Dental insurance can be procured for individuals, groups and even for a family. If provided by your company, the cost of the insurance is deductable from your salary.
Group dental insurance is usually done by an employer for the employees. The cost of this is deducted from the employees’ salary. While looking for dental plans independently, you need to know that insurance providers offer plans that are comprehensive and custom made. Depending on your requirements you may choose either, but it may be advisable to go for a comprehensive dental insurance plan that can cover even a dental surgery if need be.
There are essentially two types of dental insurance plans:
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
- Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO)
As in most cases, these categories of dental insurance have their own benefits and drawbacks.
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
The PPO is an organization of health care providers who form an agreement with an insurer to provide health care at reduced rates to the insurer. In other words, Preferred Provider Organization will offer an insured member a sizeable discount rate below the rate that is usually charged.
- Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO)
The DHMO is comprises of a legal body of dentists and specialists who provide dental care services to eligible participants at a fixed rate. DHMO plans generally provide cover on preventive, i.e. annual checkups, x-rays, teeth cleanings etc; corrective dental care, as well as major dental treatment.
Coverage of Dental Insurance:
Coverage of dental services vary from individual insurance providers. All insurance providers do not necessarily provide all these services. The following list is to give you a general idea of the services that are usually covered by an insurance company.
- Dental cleaning for removing plaque and tartar
- Extraction of teeth or surgery that can be included in non-cosmetic surgery.
- Dental x-rays.
- Filling treatments on tooth cavities and chippings.
- Any urgent dental care in case of an injury or accident. (E.g. tooth replacement or dental surgery)
It is prudent to weigh the pros and cons of your dental health insurance carefully before parting with your hard earned money. Make sure you visit at least 4 to 5 insurance providers to gain a variety of information about the dental health insurance coverage that they do and do not offer. One also needs to be aware of several loopholes to a dental insurance agreement. To gain maximum benefit out of your insurance plan, try to find a service provider and insurance plan that closest suits your budget and needs.
